DETAILThe build
WHY IT EXISTSA DT-01 with none of the usual rules. Built around a fictional Volkswagen rally concept, this low-slung showpiece pairs a BOLIM-painted F1-inspired shell with rare wheel fitment, stretched tyres and obsessive attention to stance.
I wanted to see just how far I could take a DT-01 away from its original kit specification. The starting point was a familiar Tamiya platform, but the finished car was always intended to be something completely different — a fictional, period-inspired Volkswagen rally machine built around attitude rather than performance.
The body was painted by BOLIM, taking an F1-inspired livery and giving it a Volkswagen twist. The combination of Rothmans and Shell-style graphics, weathering and the unusual VW theme gives the shell the appearance of a car that could have existed in an alternative motorsport history.
The chassis keeps the stock gearing and spur, but the motor was changed to a Tamiya Acto pink motor. A Savox servo completes the electronics, although there is deliberately no ESC fitted. This car was never intended to run — it's a display build where the visual details and stance take priority.
The wheels are Aqroshot wheels fitted with BOLIM inserts, finished in a striking vintage gold. I wanted the inserts to sit deep inside the wheels and create a proper deep-dish look, which completely transforms the DT-01's stance.
The tyres were probably the most painful part of the build. I used DF-01 Force tyres and force-fitted them onto the wheels to achieve an extreme amount of stretch. Getting them mounted was such a battle that I genuinely felt like I needed a new pair of thumbs afterwards. Once fitted, though, the exaggerated sidewalls gave the car exactly the aggressive, oversized look I was after.
I also wanted the suspension sitting ridiculously low. The dampers were lowered as far as possible by fitting O-rings inside the shocks, restricting their extension and dropping the chassis into a much more aggressive stance.
The result is a DT-01 that has little interest in being practical. It's a fictional rally car, a styling exercise and a display piece — built from a Tamiya chassis, but pushed well beyond what the original kit ever intended.
